Fentanyl emergency, ‘EU plans to restrict medical use too?’

Brussels. ‘How does the European Commission plan to restrict the spread of Fentanyl? Are there plans to also restrict its medical use in order to prevent abuse and addiction?’
These are the questions submitted on Thursday 25 July to the European Commission by Paolo Inselvini, newly elected MEP in Brussels. Fentanyl is one of the world’s deadliest drugs, but it is also a substance used in several pain medications. It is an opioid 100 times more powerful than morphine, and much more lethal than heroin. In the United States of America it is very popular both as a drug and as an opiate: in one year it killed 75,000 people in the country, 70% of all overdose deaths.
It is slowly spreading also in Europe and in Italy, just on Wednesday four doses were discovered in the boot of a car on Lake Garda.
The question tabled by Inselvini also concerns possible prevention and awareness-raising initiatives for citizens, with particular regard to younger people. ‘Fentanyl represents a growing threat due to its potency and low cost,’ said the MEP. ‘We cannot allow the use of such dangerous substances to become normalised.’
